Neighborhood
Residents Catch Illegal Dumpsters In The Act

|
When illegal dumpers tried to unload roofing and landscaping
materials in a vacant lot on Wildemere and Lawrence on Detroit's
West side, they didn't expect to come face to face with some area
residents who weren't about to let the culprits trash their
neighborhood.
On July 25, 2006, retired Ford worker Craig Young saw
two men in a pickup truck dumping on the yard of an abandoned
property across the street from his home. He confronted the men and
helped draw the attention of Quenton Howell, an off-duty Detroit
police officer who lives in the neighborhood. Howell, Young, and two
neighbors held the man until police arrived. In the end, Michael
Lipka of Rochester Hills was ticketed for illegal dumping, and his
car was impounded. His workers cleaned up the mess.
Earlier this year, Mayor Kilpatrick formed an Illegal
Dumping Task Force to address community concerns and to take aim at
illegal dumpers as part of his ongoing efforts to keep Detroit
clean. The Mayor said the vigilance that neighbors on Wildemere and
Lawrence displayed was to be commended, and asked more Detroiters to
help be the eyes and ears the city needs in neighborhoods to keep
illegal dumpers off our streets. |
